Cell is the basic structural and functional unit of life. It was first observed and named by Robert Hook. In higher animals and plants the following organelles are there
  • Nucleus:- storehouse of the genes that are the units of inheritance.
  • Chromosomes are the bearers of genes, which are passed on from one generation to the next.
  • Nucleolus are the sites of RNA synthesis
Other than the nucleus the cytoplasm (the ground substance) consists of:
  • Mitochondrion :- Powerhouse producing energy;
  • Golgi Apparatus, Endoplasmic Reticulum :- Protein Synthesis, modification and export
  • Lysosomes are the suicide bags.
Cells divide into daughter cells by Mitosis.
  • Eukaryotes:- True Nuclei, with a nuclear membrane. E.g. Mouse and humans
  • Prokaryotes:- No nuclear membrane. E.g., Bacteria
